Truths about Cosmetics
When you are reading magazines or watching TV, you can see a lot of cosmetic advertisements. In the advertisements, you can easily find common words like natural, fragrance free, organic and alcohol free, etc. Do you really know what these words mean to you and your money? Do these words mean that the cosmetics are good to you or are they simply the advertising words?
The word natural signifies the organic ingredients. Cosmetic brands use the word natural instead of organic because it sounds better. There is no assurance for the safety of such natural ingredients, since the “natural advertisement” is not monitored by FDA. There is no research that proves the effectiveness of natural cosmetics superior to the chemical ones. Besides, when the preservatives and stabilizers are added to the natural ingredients, they simply lose their natural nature.
In addition, the safety level of the natural ingredients is a question. But, you may say they are relatively safer than the chemical ones. There are some natural ingredients such as mint and rosemary that can be irritating. Some people are allergic to lemon and lavender. As the natural ingredients are with larger molecular size, they are less likely to penetrate into the skin. Therefore, their effect may be similar to placing fresh vegetables onto your face.
Non-irritating is another common selling point for the cosmetic products. For ladies with sensitive skin type, they are most prone to use the non-irritating ones. Unluckily, like the word natural, there is no rules for usage of non-irritating also. Therefore, every product can claim that it is non-irritating. From my knowledge and experience, many non-irritating products cause irritation on skin because some other irritating and allergens have been added to the cosmetics as well.
Alcohol is a common solvent to use in cosmetics. As alcohol can be irritating and cause skin dryness, many brands disclose to you that they are alcohol free. In fact, alcohol is not that bad, especially certain type of alcohol like spermol and stearyl alcohol. Alcohol can help the removal of dead skin or cuticle. If you find alcohol in the end of the ingredient list (usually list by amount), you may not need to worry as the amount is not significant.
Many ladies like the pleasant smell of the cosmetics, but many of you start to love the fragrance free ones. Fragrance free is assumed to be less irritating and natural. In fact, when the brands say fragrance free, they are not exactly fragrance free. Many of the products actually the fragrant plant extracts to substitute. And these extracts can still cause allergies and irritations to skin.
