Tail Bone Pain And The Reduction Of Back Pain

Many of us spend a vast majority of our time sitting. We commute to work, sit for most of an eight hour day, commute back home, sit to read or watch TV. Sitting concentrates much of our body weight onto our tail bone, and if we are experiencing tail bone pain, every moment of that can be agony.

If you’re worried that nothing can be done about this constant pain, its important to realize that, unless due to a severe trauma such as a break, tail bone pain can be addressed by a variety of exercises and postural changes. By creating an exercise regimen designed to address tail bone pain, you’re specifically working to strengthen muscles that help improve your posture. Improving your posture lessens the pain and vastly improves your quality of life.

Posture, whether good, or bad affects many parts of our lives. From how you stand and walk, to how you sit or what position you lay in when sleeping, if you have bad posture, it can heavily influence tailbone pain, so as you can see good posture is about not only standing and walking correctly. A great postural program should address all these issues, however many do not.

The tailbone is located right at the base of our spine, is the last bone there, and is one of our body’s most important support structures. The body is supported and kept aligned by hundreds of small muscles that move in a flexible way to accommodate our movement. The tailbone as well should be able to move freely without pain; however, that is not always the case.

At times, our postures compromise proper alignment, and sadly, the way we sit puts a lot of pressure onto our tailbone, which is not meant to support the weight of our bodies. Imagine it this way, your head, which is roughly the weight of a bowling ball that sits on top of a narrow support structure that ends in a small point. Additionally if you add up the several internal organs of the body around the lower spine, which all apply weight on this tiny tailbone, you may begin to understand why your tailbone may be experiencing terrible pain.

This pressure is weighing down on this small area everyday. The tailbone should move freely and without pain, however with bad posture and much weight put upon it, the muscles surrounding the tailbone will tend to tense up to try and keep you up-right in a good posture. Instead of moving freely, the tailbone will seize up and press against the newly tightened muscles. Therefore, the pain you may be experiencing in your tailbone is an indication to adopt a better posture, where your weight is more evenly distributed.

Thankfully, fixing this problem only involves a simple change in habits. Your hipbones are flat and much wider than your tailbone. Therefore, they can distribute weight more evenly. If you tilt your pelvis forward slightly, you will take weight off the tailbone and shift it onto the hips. This will free tense muscles and allow them to begin relaxing. As the muscles relax, the pain will lessen.

One way to help with this is by increasing the flexibility of the lower back. By loosening and improving the various lower back muscles, tilting your pelvis forward becomes easier. A good and safe regimen of lower back stretches is key to this process. Lower back stretches need not be painful. Many are simple and enjoyable. They can be done standing up, thus requiring less space. You might even make them a part of regular breaks at the office. Not only will each break relieve your tail bone pain temporarily, but each day of routine and safe stretching brings you just that little bit closer to ending the pain for good.

When looking for ways to improve your posture, make sure that your routine includes a series of lower backstretches. Stretching the lower back will provide the abdominal strength needed for you to be able to easily tilt your pelvis forward to relieve tailbone pain.

Along with experiencing less pain from your tailbone, with good posture, you will look more confident and dauntless. It is known that good posture changes how we are viewed, and treated. So relieving your back and tailbone pain will also change how others perceive you. With a good postural improvement regimen, you can make a tremendous life change that is healthy.
