Is It Safe For Diabetic Persons To Drive?

The Research

Research done by Reuter Health in New York said that diabetic patients have more risk while driving if they do not undergo proper medical treatments.

A survey was done with diabetic patients of 450 adult drivers out of which 50% were confirmed that they face a disaster when the sugar level is lower which involves both gender aged over 40 years. They too belong to Type 1 diabetics or insulin needier that were prolonged with over 26 years. This survey was done by University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dr. Daniel Cox, who headed the study, likened driving with low blood sugar to driving with a flat tire. If your tire was flat, you would stop immediately to change it, so should the diabetic driver with low blood sugar.

While less than 3% reported an accident as a result of low blood sugar, of the over 50% who experienced some kind of mishap, those “mishaps” ranged from zoning out and becoming disoriented, to being pulled over or needing someone else to take over driving.

The Conclusion

It is advisable that the diabetic patients should avoid driving. They should regularly check their insulin levels before driving and should be feeling well to make sure themselves and fellow drivers are safe on road.
