Diabetes is a disease that affects 24 million people in the US. Not everyone who has Diabetes realizes that they do, actually about a quarter of those who have the disease do not know it. The bodies of people who have Diabetes do not properly use or produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body by telling the cells to absorb glucose in bloodstream. Glucose is the form of energy that the body can absorb after foods have been digested. Without insulin to prompt the cells to absorb glucose the body is unable to use the energy that it needs to function properly. This results in a sugar surplus in the bloodstream. There are a few different types of Diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious chronic disease and there are some legitimate reasons to fear being diagnosed with it. When fear of diabetes starts having a negative impact on your life, you could be experiencing diabetophobia – the official name for fear of diabetes. The effect on the function of the hip joint of a difference in the length of the legs has been mentioned previously in an article in this series. The longer of the two legs will attempt to keep the head level by flexing slightly at the hip and knee, leading to a lack of movement into extension of the hip as we walk. Rotation of the hip and pelvis is required to achieve a more normal gait pattern if extension is not fully achievable. This may be a small change in joint movement, but on repetition thousands of times per day this can set up difficulties in joint movement and over time a painful joint condition.
